Associate Professor Jie Cai recently has her paper accepted for publication by one of the top 5 economics journals, Review of Economic Studies (RES). The paper “Growth through Intersectoral Knowledge Linkages”, coauthored with Nan Li from International Monetary Fund, is the 2nd paper of the SOE faculty that has been accepted for publication by the top 5 economics journals in this year and the 7th top paper since 2015 when the discipline of theoretical economics of the SOE was selected to be listed in Shanghai High Peak Discipline Category II.
The paper mainly studies the network of knowledge linkages between sectors and its impact on firm innovation and aggregate growth and reveals that the majority of innovations are developed by multi-technology (or multi-sector) firms. They develop a general equilibrium model of multi-sector firm innovation in which intersectoral knowledge linkages determine a firm’s self-selection into different sets of sectors and its R&D investment across sectors. It captures how firms evolve in the “technology space”, accounts for cross-sector differences in R&D intensity, and describes an aggregate model of technological change. Using simulations, they demonstrate that the model can match new observations concerning firms’ multi-technology patenting behavior documented in this paper. The model also yields new insights into the effects of barriers to diversity on growth.
Associate Professor Jie Cai has joined the SOE in the 2015 overseas talent recruitment as a tenure-track faculty member with a Ph.D. degree from the University of British Columbia. Her main research areas are innovation and economic growth, international economics, dynamic firm and network theory, and her previous papers include one in Journal of International Economics, an A journal in economics as listed by SUFE.
This year, news of publication in top journals in economics and its branches keeps pouring in, including 2 papers in top journals in economics and 11 papers in top journals in branches of economics.
