The 3rd SUFE Economic History Workshop- "History and Thought: The Transformation and Development of Chinese Economy in Modern Times" Held at SOE

During July 1-2, the 3rd SUFE Economic History Workshop- " History and Thought: The Transformation and Development of Chinese Economy in Modern Times" was Held at SOE. The workshop is sponsored by the SOE and the editorial department of Researches in Chinese Economic History. Over 50 experts and scholars from domestic and overseas universities and research institutes attended the workshop, including those from University of Southern California, University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Massachusetts Boston, London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, University of Manchester, University of Queensland, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Xiamen University, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The opening ceremony was hosted by the SOE Party Secretary Fang Wang.

Director of Department of Economic History, Professor Lin Cheng presented the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. He pointed out the workshop was organized jointly by the SOE and the editorial department of Researches in Chinese Economic History, and it was aimed at promoting in-depth exchanges and discussions of new methods, new perspectives and new issues in the field of economic history. He added that this year the workshop focused on the transformation and development of Chinese economy in modern times from the aspects of history and thought, and was designed to review historical practice, sort out ideological changes, and provide reference for solving practical problems. Later he briefed on the guests the development of Department of Economic History from the aspects of scientific research, personnel training, teachers’ construction, and international cooperation and exchanges, and expressed his hope that a high-level, academic exchange platform which combines economic history and intellectual history can be built to interpret the economic and social development in modern China’s transition period from the aspects of system, historical facts and thought.

After two keynote speeches and four panel discussions, Researcher Mingkong Wei from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences concluded the meeting. He shared his views on the achievements and bottlenecks in the current economic history research, and applauded the multi-disciplinary exchanges among economic history, history of economic thought and political economy. This workshop fully demonstrated the remarkable achievements made by the economic history discipline of SOE in recent years and played an important role in academic exchanges in the fields of economic history research at home and abroad.
