On December 15th, the Office of National Philosophy and Social Science announced the list of major projects approved for the National Social Science Fund of China in 2023. Professor  Yuanyuan Chen's team was granted the major project titled Research on the Logic, Patterns, and Laws of Coordinated Development between Population and Economy.

This project, based on the characteristics of China's population and economic and social development in the new era, aims to reveal the logic, patterns, and laws of coordinated development between population and economic growth, and to propose policy measures needed to promote coordinated development of population and economy. The research team aims to construct a life-cycle decision-making theoretical model with Chinese characteristics, assess the strengths and weaknesses of past policy implementations, and formulate potential development plans for the future. Through simulation analysis, the team will accurately identify the effects of different policies on minors, adults, and the elderly, and explore the mechanisms and economic laws behind policy effects.

The research team focuses on four important dimensions adapted to economic growth and population development. Firstly, it examines the interactive effects between family marriage, fertility, and educational decisions and economic and social factors. Secondly, it explores economic growth patterns adapted to the current population structure to better promote the effective allocation of human capital in the job market. Thirdly, it pays attention to the challenges and opportunities that population aging brings to sustainable economic growth. Lastly, it analyzes the trends of population distribution changes caused by urbanization and the regional economic development strategies adapted to them. By comprehensively analyzing the roles of different life-cycle groups in the economy and society, the project seeks to explore the key links connecting population and economic coordinated development in China at present.
