2021 Shanghai Applied Economics Workshop Held in SUFE

The 2021 Shanghai Applied Economics Workshop was held in Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, from June 18-19, 2021. The workshop was co-sponsored by School of Economics, Institute for Advanced Research (IAR), and the Key Laboratory of Mathematical Economics (SUFE) of Ministry of Education. Guest speakers from over 20 universities are invited. The workshop attracted many scholars and students in the field of applied economics. Xinyuan Chen, Vice President of SUFE, and Yahong Zhou, Dean of School of Economics of SUFE, attended the workshop and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was hosted by Lin Liguo, Vice Dean of IAR.

Prof. Xinyuan Chen gave the speech first. He said that high-quality development is the theme of China's economic and social development in the 14th Five-Year Plan and even in a longer period, and it concerns the overall situation of China's socialist modernization construction. With the themes of Environmental Regulation under the Double Targets for Carbon Emissions and Labor Market under High Quality Development, the workshop discussed the frontier issues of applied economics such as double targets for carbon emissions, green finance, carbon market, gender difference, health and medical care, and labor market. The discussion of these research topics will help to promote the high quality development of China's economy.

He pointed out that for the 14th Five-Year Plan, SUFE has established the basic principle of being people-oriented, connotative development, cultural inheritance and innovation, and pursuit of excellence and focused on deepening comprehensive reform and education evaluation reform to accelerate the modernization of governance system and governance capacity of the university. The discipline of applied economics of SUFE will give more thoughts and solutions to promote high-quality economic development to counter the changing and developing economic situation, new problems and contradictions.

Prof. Yahong Zhou then briefly shared the reform and practice of the School of Economics and the Institute for Advanced Research in academic exchange over the past ten years, and sincerely thanked the experts and scholars for their continuous attention and support to disciplines of applied economics such as labor economics and environmental and resource economics. He said the college will make continuous and active efforts to organize high-quality and high-level academic exchange activities in the future and build exchange platforms to promote professional research and help the development of the discipline.

The workshop focused on the two major areas of labor economics and environmental and resource economics. Invited scholars in these areas from universities all over China showed concern for the sustainability of China's social development and the major needs of national economic and social development in the 14th Five-Year Plan period, analyzed the serious challenges faced by economic development, paid attention to the ways of high-quality development of China's economy, actively explored the important direction of industrial restructuring, and contributed new theoretical paradigms and solutions for implementing the new development concept and building a new development pattern.
